(The sound of glass being shattered).

“What was that?” I asked, while many family members at the dinner table either stood in with shock, or simply froze at their chairs.

“Where did that sound come from?” my dad asked worriedly.

“I think it’s from the back,” replied my uncle.

“It must be one of those kids again!” I said, while running towards the main door. I could not stop at this point because I knew I could catch the culprit. I followed full speed until I ended up at a building’s doorstep.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” said the doorman.

“Those kids just broke several windows of my house!” I said, breathing heavily.

“I don’t care who broke what. You’re about to enter a building full of families, so think twice before you make your next step,” he said in a threatening tone.

I live in a beautiful duplex house, with a colorful, yet small garden in front. It is located in Salwa, an area that is filled with families occupying apartment buildings, so it is natural to see kids playing in our streets. Many of those kids belong to families that are related to each other, which explains why they usually hang out in big numbers. It is a tradition for families in Kuwait to gather on the weekends, and that includes my family too, but it had become frightening for some of us when weekends arrive.

Ever since we moved to this house in Salwa, which was back in 2011, we knew that we would be surrounded with apartments mostly, which didn’t seem like a problem to us at that time. You can see kids hanging out in the streets with their slingshots and other gun toys, but you wouldn’t think bad of it. However, once the garden was planted, we started noticing “little incidents” as my mom called them: flowers that have been stomped on, others had been plucked out entirely from their roots. These occurrences happened every couple of months or so, so they weren’t that alarming, per se, but they were definitely irritating because we could not tell who’s behind these acts of harassment. The garden vandalism did not stop there, but it also did not evolve.

After a few months of no incidents, it felt like the culprit or maybe culprits had moved to another area. It had finally become a peaceful and stable environment to live in, but that did not take long. One Saturday morning, I woke up from a good night sleep, made me a cup of coffee and took my pack of cigarettes along with the lighter. I usually head to the garden if the weather was cool or chilly since I live in one of the hottest climate countries in the world. It seemed like a beautiful, day, but to my surprise, I saw a giant hole in the garden with one of our biggest trees half broken. I was shocked, I didn’t know what to think of it exactly; it mostly felt like an attack on me and my family. I went back inside to tell someone, anyone, about what I had just seen, just to discover from my mother that her bathroom’s window had been broken and the floor had some glass shards on it alongside some stones. The evidence was right there, the little stones, Where have I seen this before? I wondered. Then it hit me, this is definitely the work of a slingshot.

I come from a family that believes in turning the other cheek, and that God will punish those who hurt us, which made us forgive many of those “little incidents” and ignore them, but enough is enough at this point. First of all, I realize that my house lies between apartment complexes, which means that there ought to be many families with their kids living there. I also acknowledge that kids have schools to attend to, which limits their playing time on weekdays, and completely maximizes it on weekends. The same thing goes to the parents of those children, they have work on normal days, so when the weekend arrives, they would want their kids out of the house so that they could relax and have some quality time. Furthermore, my garden has vegetables, plants, flowers, and trees with long branches that attract different types of birds, in retrospect these birds seemed like the perfect target practice for these kids.

I remember myself as a child, all I wanted to do was experiment and play the whole day, I was beyond curious about the world that we live in, so I understand what it’s like to be young and full of energy. I can still recall many memories of me as a child, and I remember clearly that I was disciplined in many ways, my day was planned by my parents from the moment I woke up till the moment I went back to sleep. They supervised many of the activities I had done and basically directed all my energy at the right things, which might sound controlling but the truth is that it was the right amount of control. These kids though, they have no supervision whatsoever, they tend to do what they feel like doing without any consequences or some type of authority that leads by example, so I cannot really blame them. My aunt Haifa for example, she often visits us and usually parks her car in front of the house as any visitor would. Long story short, one of her car windows got smashed to pieces with some eyewitnesses that were around that day, mostly the drivers of our neighbors, which could explain why they didn’t do anything about it, but at least they pointed out that it was a group of little kids. This was causing agitation and anxiety in the house and to whomever wanted to visit. What’s worse than all of this is that this has been happening quite frequently by now, with almost no physical evidence that links it with a specific person or group, but we know it, and since we’ve been dealing with the losses for a while now, it’s only logical that we had to take this seriously and find a solution.

There are a few solutions that crossed my mind over this period of time. We as a family, could ignore it all and hope that this doesn’t occur again, or at least not as bad as the last times, but this would be wishful thinking, because this happened often and over the years. The second solution would be by catching one of the kids while he’s committing the crime, which happens in a very short period of time so that leaves a really small window for any of us to succeed, but let’s say that one of my family members is capable of doing so, maybe that kid would lead us to his family’s apartment and a confrontation with his parents would take place and set the record straight. Another solution would be by taking a video of the culprit while he’s in the act so that we could probably sue him or his family for the damage that have been done.

The video idea was almost a success because it led my father to a conclusion that opened our minds to something that was much better, he says:
