Assessment question
You just started a new job, and your boss is adjusting the prices on some of the company’s products. In chatting with you about your marketing class, they realize it would be good to incorporate a breakeven analysis as they consider whether to raise or lower the prices of specific items. They have forgotten what a breakeven analysis is and ask you to refresh their memory. You explain that a breakeven analysis is the method for determining the amount of product that must be sold at a given price to generate:

sufficient revenue to pay down debt.

sufficient revenue to cover fixed costs.

sufficient revenue to cover total costs.

sufficient revenue to cover variable costs.

sufficient revenue to achieve profit objectives.

Luxury Mills is a small producer of cashmere yarn, which it sells to clothing manufacturers for sweaters, coats, scarves, and other cashmere clothing. The company currently sells its yarn at $20 per unit, but costs have gone up, and the company would like to raise its prices. Further, Luxury Mills’ yarn is of higher quality than that of most competitors, and the company’s marketing executives feel the company can justify charging a premium price.
The company’s fixed costs per month are $40,000. This includes building and equipment leases, administrative expenses, salaries, and utilities. The company’s variable costs for each unit of yarn produced is $10. This includes the cost of raw cashmere wool and the chemicals and dyes used to treat the wool.

Comparison and/or Contrast Assignment (Academic Argument)

This comparison and/or contrast essay is a personal response and can include your own personal opinions, reactions, examples, and observations. You may use personal pronouns in your essay (for example, “I”), but do not rely heavily on them (avoid ‘I think that’ or ‘I believe that’ etc.). Remember to avoid using unclear pronouns (e.g. you, we, our). Clarify your meaning and be specific. For this essay, I provided three sources for you to use as supporting evidence. You must compare and/or contrast two of the given sources (see requirement below). A minimum of four citations (either direct quotes or paraphrases) is required. You must carefully construct your essay with a strong structure – it is very easy to get off track with a response paper! Remember to include all the main components of a strong essay (thesis statement, topic sentences, supporting evidence, and conclusion) by using an essay outline to help you plan your response.

Instructions:
Write a multi-paragraph essay (4-5 paragraphs) (approximately 700 words in length); include a thesis statement with at least three main points of comparison and/or contrast, and a strong conclusion.
Use either BLOCK or Point-by-Point pattern in your essay structure.
DOUBLE-SPACE your essay.
Organize your support in advance, and proofread carefully for grammar, spelling and mechanics. You will lose marks for poor language skills.
Use specific support from two sources in your essay. If you use a quotation, make sure you analyze it (DO NOT simply insert a quotation and move on).
Remember to include in-text citations for all of the evidence you use, and a Reference page at the end of your assignment.
Remember that your comparison and/or contrast of the sources should support your overall purpose/thesis. Ask yourself: What are you arguing in this essay? Why are you comparing and/or contrasting these two sources?

Sources:
The two sources you choose to compare and/or contrast for the assignment will be based on which TedTalk you did not use in your infographic assignment. That is, if you chose Tristan Harris’ TedTalk for the Infographic, you will be comparing Sherry Turkle’s TedTalk with Brandon Ambrosino’s essay for this essay. If you chose Sherry Turkle’s TedTalk for the Infographic, you will be comparing Tristan Harris’ TedTalk with Brandon Ambrosino’s essay for this essay.

Topics (Choose ONE):

Compare and/or Contrast the speaker’s/author’s use of logic, emotion and credibility. Who is more persuasive and why?
Compare and/or Contrast the speaker’s/author’s critique of social media. Which argument is most relevant to young people today?
Compare and/or Contrast the speaker’s/author’s solution to the challenges created by technology in our lives. In your opinion, who offers the most important, practical or realistic solutions?
Compare and/or Contrast the speaker’s/author’s observations of how technology affects our behaviour. Do you agree with their observations? Are their arguments accurate? Which argument do you identify with more as a College student?

In fact, that is the only operation it performs, and it performs a great many of them. Over the past two decades this small 132-bed hospital has averaged 10,360 operations annually. Last year, it had a record year and performed nearly 10,860 operations. A hernia repair operation at Shouldice Hospital is performed by one of the 12 full-time surgeons assisted by one of seven part-time assistant surgeons. The first operations begin at 7:30 AM each day, Monday through Friday. Surgeons generally take about one hour to prepare for and perform each hernia operation, and they operate on an average of at most four patients per day. This four patient per day limit on the average number of operations performed per surgeon has been found to be the best operating level for the hospital as it take into account time the surgeons need for patient exams and consultations, updating medical charts, writing reports, traveling to professional conferences, vacations, and other times when they are performing other duties or are not available to perform surgeries. A given surgeon may perform more than four surgeries on a given day, but the average cannot exceed four without having adverse effects on overall hospital operations. The surgeons’ day ends at 4 p.m. Although hernia repair operations are performed only five days a week, the remainder of the hospital is in operation continuously to attend to recovering patients. The table below shows the room occupancy plan for the existing system. Each row in the table follows the patients who checked in on a given day. The columns indicate the number of patients in the hospital on a given night. BEDS REQUIRED THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY CHECK-IN DAY Monday MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY 44 44 Tuesday 44 44 44 Wednesday 44 44 44 44 Thursday. Friday Saturday Sunday 44 44 Total 88 132 132 132 88 For example, the first row of the table shows that 44 people checked in on Monday and were in the hospital for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights before being discharged on Thursday. By summing the column of the table for Wednesday, we see that there are 132 patients staying in the hospital that night. The medical facilities at Shouldice consist of four operating rooms, a patient recovery room, a laboratory, and six examination rooms. Now look at the effect of increasing the number of beds by 50 percent. a. How many operations could the hospital perform per day before running out of bed capacity? (Assume operations are performed five days per week, with the same number performed on each day.) (Round your answer to the nearest whole number.) Number of operations per day Book erences b. What would the utilization of the bed capacity become if the new beds were added and the hospital were to perform the number of operations calculated in part a? (Round your answers to 1 decimal place.) Utilization Monday % Tuesday % Wednesday % Thursday % Friday % Saturday % Sunday % Total % e-1. In order to fill the beds as calculated in part a, how many hernia repair operations would need to be performed in each operating room each day? (Since it makes no sense to perform just a part of an operation, round your answer up to the next whole number if necessary) in part a, how many hernia repair operations would need to be performed in each operating room each day? (Since it makes no sense to perform just a part of an operation, round your answer up to the next whole number if necessary.) Operations per operating room per day c-2. Based on the current scheduling practices, does the hospital have enough operating room capacity for the number of operations required to fill the available beds as calculated in part a? In order to fill the beds as calculated in part a, how many hernia repair operations would each surgeon need to be available to perform each day on average? Based on the current scheduling practices, does the hospital have enough overall capacity of surgeons and operating rooms to perform the operations required to fill the available beds as calculated in part a?
