I. Breaking down ideas from big ideas to detailed information and break down structure of how the information is presented.
This article first informs teachers how and why learning standards are created at the national and state levels for elementary education. Then the article explains what standards are in general and then specifies the differences between national and state standards. National standards provide a broad view of the content ideas that students in each grade should know. They contain the big ideas of the content that is spread from grade to grade across elementary school. The national standards also suggest some ways that the content is related by concepts in each grade. Finally, states take the standards and decide which ones their students should focus on and design a state assessment of those standards for school districts’ teaching and learning. Schools then follow the plan from the school district administration to teach the standards.
II. Think critically about it by analyzing the most important pieces of information in the article.
The national standards act as a guide to state education departments to create more detailed state standards for use by local school districts. The national standards are the big ideas in each of the content areas that students need to know. The relationship between the national standards’ content concepts is important because the connections show the teacher how the big ideas relate to one other. The teacher can help students make important connections across the big ideas and learn information in chunks instead of learning isolated and unconnected pieces. Students remember ideas that connect to each other and often forget disconnected facts.
State standards are built from the national standards’ concepts and are more specific by breaking down the learning into smaller pieces. Then districts decide what to include from the state standards so teachers can prepare to teach them the concepts and skills that relate to each grade level. The districts make curriculum guides that include ideas and resources for teachers to know how to teach the state standards.
III. Draw conclusions
If students are to be tested on the standards at the end of the school year it’s vital that the teacher specifically teaches what is in the standards. Now schools are even using specific programs from companies that lay out each standard and what to teach and the resources for teaching it. I think that this plan is very limiting to the experienced teacher but provides a lot of structure and support for newer teachers. Forcing an experienced and proven teacher to use this minute by minute plan for teaching could be restrictive to a large degree by leaving out the creative and motivational skills that the teacher has. I could easily see the teacher becoming bored with the material and this could make the presentation boring as well. Students might tire of the material in the plan as well as it may not take into account their individual needs and interests. I believe that the teachers at the grade level could take what came from the national and state standards and then consider the community and students in their school and what would interest them to design effective instruction tailored to their needs. I can see why school districts purchase these detailed plans if teachers are not prepared to design instruction or don’t feel like they have the time to spend creating quality lessons in units where the ideas are connected and everything is “covered”. There is a lot that rides on students doing well on the state test. Money and status for the school is connected to student and teacher performance. This article made me think about all that standards mean to education at the national and state level and how that comes all the way down to the teachers and kids and truly affects their lives. I wonder why some people don’t want to teach the standards when they have so much impact on all stakeholders?
