Each essay is comprised of some of the same component logical parts; however, each also contains their own unique rhetorical situation and associated characteristics to respond to those constraints. As with any other writing choice we make, each subgenre of the essay has benefits and drawbacks, depending on the topic of discussion and the goals of the essay’s author. For this writing assignment, you will write an op-ed, an informational essay, or an academic/media analysis responding to George Gmelsch and Richard Felson’s “Can a Lucky Charm Get You Through Organic Chemistry” and “Uncertainty and Magic,” Amy Devitt’s Writing Genres (pp. 1-32), Lloyd Bitzer’s “The Rhetorical Situation,” Susan Bordo’s “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body,” or Innuendo Studios’s “The Artist is Absent.” Your essay should include a proposition or thesis that comprises an original, substantive claim about one of these essays, as well as adhering to the genre conventions of your selection. You are required to discuss your topic w/me via conference or email by end of day Thursday 10/14. Some examples of essays that would fit this prompt would include:A media analysis comparing the rhetorical techniques in Gmelsch and Felson’s two essays. An academic essay analyzing the use of Bitzer’s rhetorical situation in support of Devitt’s “Writing Genres”An op-ed responding to the claims in Innuendo Studios’s “The Artist is Absent”An informative essay examining Bordo’s analysis of advertising visuals in “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body.”Your essay should deeply engage with the claims made by one or more of these authors in their essays, rather than using them as a lens to view your own personal experiences, as would be typical of personal essay/memoir. As such, your essay should be limited to the third person exclusively.

We, in the process of writing, find ideas that resonate with us, for better or ill, and come to terms

We, in the process of writing, find ideas that resonate with us, for better or ill, and come to terms with our understanding of them. And during this process, we begin to engage in the procedures that Harris describes as “Forwarding” and “Countering.”For WA#3, your task is to either Forward or Counter a claim made by one of the essays we’ve read thus far–including the work of Min zhan-Lu, Gloria Andzaldua, or June Jordan–and utilizing the frame of Mary Louise Pratt’s contact zones. Your essay should leave a reader clear as to the contact zone this author used, as well as how you are forwarding or countering the proposition raised by your selected author. However, I do want to be very clear about one matter. If you choose to counter a proposition outlined by one of these authors, the goal should still be to showcase something useful or illuminating about the work. We are not looking to denigrate the work of these authors, especially on account of how personal many of the topics discussed are for each respectively. If you wish to counter, I will expect you to discuss your plans with me first, in order to make sure we are moving forward in a productive manner.
